WHAT IS A PORCELAIN CROWN?
A Cosmetic Porcelain Crown is a constructed ceramic tooth that is placed on top of a patient’s tooth, effectively covering it with a bright, white replacement. Unlike dental implants, these are reserved more for those who are suffering a poor appearance on their tooth. Porcelain crowns can cover discoloration, cracks, crevices, and more with an effective replacement that enables you to continue your daily activities.
HOW LONG DO PORCELAIN CROWNS LAST?
Your porcelain crown’s longevity is largely based on the quality of the material. At PGA Dentistry our porcelain crowns are constructed at a reputable ceramics laboratory, and are guaranteed to fit comfortably. On average, porcelain crowns can last anywhere from 15 to 20 years with proper care and maintenance. Unlike dentures or dental bridges, porcelain crowns are remarkably durable. However, we recommend that you continue with your routine dental visits in order to maintain your crown. If you do need a replacement, it’s often due to bite issues, general wear and tear, or cases of tooth decay underneath in the natural tooth.
WHAT KIND OF PORCELAIN CROWNS ARE THERE?
There are a variety of dental crowns available in the dental field, from stainless steel to resin, but at PGA Dentistry we’ve found that metal-free E.Max® porcelain crowns are the most natural-looking for our patients. Other types of crowns can yellow or break down over time, and are sometimes easy to tell apart from your natural teeth. With our porcelain crowns through our specialty ceramic laboratory, we enjoy transforming our patients’ smiles into brighter, whiter variations.
HOW LONG DOES THE PORCELAIN CROWN PROCESS LAST?
The Journey To A Brighter Smile With Porcelain Crowns requires a few steps. First, there is a consultation with Dr. Ajmo to determine which teeth need porcelain crowns and to discuss the process. Next is to prepare your tooth that will be receiving the crown. Any decay must be removed and the tooth will be cleaned and polished in order to best fit the crown. At this point you will receive provisional restorations for a short period, so that you can see how the crown will feel, appear, and if it affects your bite. After this, your porcelain crown(s) will be constructed in the ceramics laboratory and in a few weeks be ready to place. Using cement, the crown will be bonded to your tooth.
ARE PORCELAIN CROWNS AFFORDABLE?
Since porcelain crowns have been known to last anywhere from 15 to 20 years (or longer), it is truly a long-term investment to save your smile. The final cost of the procedure will be determined during your consultations with Dr. Ajmo, and will depend on a number of factors: how many crowns you’re receiving and if any supplemental procedures are needed first.
