Sinus Lift

A SINUS LIFT CAN HELP YOUR JAW ACCOMMODATE DENTAL IMPLANTS

A sinus lift is a common supplemental treatment for dental implant patients. Dental implants require ample jawbone tissue for support. However, due to conditions such as periodontal disease, the aging process, or your natural anatomy, there may not be enough healthy bone tissue in the upper jaw to accommodate an implant without interfering with the soft tissues of the sinuses. To make it possible for your jaw to safely accommodate implants, Dr. Jay Ajmo can perform a sinus lift procedure at his Palm Beach Gardens, FL practice. By raising the sinus membrane and augmenting the jaw with transplanted bone tissue or a synthetic bone substitute, he can help you experience the vast benefits of dental implants. What Is A Sinus Lift?

Maxillary sinuses are empty, air-filled spaces located above the upper teeth, just behind the cheeks. When the upper teeth are missing or removed, some patients are left with a thin wall of bone between the sinus tissues and alveolar ridge (where teeth are normally positioned in the jaw), making it unsafe to place dental implants. During a sinus lift procedure, Dr. Ajmo raises the soft tissues of the sinuses and places grafted bone to serve as a foundation for implants.

Sinus Lift Procedure

To determine if you require a sinus lift or any other preparatory procedure before receiving dental implants, we will take a series of x-rays to study the anatomy of your jaw and sinuses.

Before surgery, we will administer IV sedation and a local anesthetic to ensure your absolute comfort. The first step in your sinus lift procedure involves creating an incision to allow access to the underlying bone and sinuses. Next, Dr. Ajmo will gently lift the thin membrane away from your jaw. Small granules of bone tissue or synthetic grafting material will be packed into the space. Over time, these granules will fuse with the jawbone. We will complete the procedure by suturing the incision closed and scheduling a follow-up appointment.

The amount of time needed for the graft to integrate with the jaw depends on the size of the graft, your natural capacity to heal, and other factors. Typically it will take between 4-9 months before you can receive implants.
