Types of Dental Implants

Dental Implants at PGA Dentistry

Whether you have lost a tooth, need a tooth extracted, or you are looking for an alternative to your current bridge or denture, dental implants provide a superior solution that will fully restore the use of your teeth and appearance of your smile. The type of dental implant you require will depend on the nature of your dental health, how many teeth you need to replace, and the area in the mouth where the dental implant will be placed. At PGA Dentistry, our renowned cosmetic dentist, Dr. Jay Ajmo is proud to offer many different types of dental implants to patients in Palm Beach Gardens and beyond.

The importance of Osseointegration for Dental Implants

Before we can talk about the different types of dental implants available, it is important to understand that they all rely on a common element – osseointegration. All dental implants, regardless of their type, rely on osseointegration to secure them permanently in the jawbone.

During osseointegration, the jawbone heals around the titanium post, fusing it permanently inside the bone. In all but Same-Day implants, osseointegration must take place before your final restoration can be fitted. In many cases, you will be fitted with a temporary restoration while your dental implant heals.

Patients must have adequate jawbone volume and density for osseointegration to occur. Before approval for dental implants can be given, we will carefully analyze the quality of your jaw bone with a 3D CT Scan. If you have insufficient jawbone density, you may first need to have a procedure known as bone grafting.

COSMETIC PORCELAIN VENEERS: PORCELAIN VENEERS, SMILE MAKEOVER WITH LASER GUM CONTOURING

Rhonda had a very narrow upper jaw with dark yellow teeth. She wanted the whitest most brilliant smile possible and a fuller smile to complement her face and reflect her youth. Dr. Ajmo performed laser gum contouring to reshape Ronda's gumline and designed a Complete Smile Lift with Porcelain Veneers. Even though Rhondas' veneers are extremely white, they still have translucencies and contours that look as natural as possible.

Single-Tooth Dental Implants

Single tooth dental implants are the most common variety. As their name suggests, they are designed to replace individual missing teeth. Single dental implants are made up of 3 parts. These are:

A titanium post. This acts as an artificial anchor for your crown, replacing the natural tooth root. The titanium post is inserted into the jaw bone by our expert implant surgeon where your permanent crown will fit.

Abutment. The abutment is a connector piece that is screwed into the implant cylinder that secures the crown to the titanium post.

A custom-designed crown. This is the part of the restoration that is visible when you smile. The crown sits above the gums and acts as an artificial tooth. This crown can be made from either porcelain or zirconia and will be created in the size, shape, and color needed to blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth, ensuring your implant looks completely natural.

Single tooth dental implants are a great alternative to a dental bridge, although it is also possible to receive an implant-supported bridge (see below).

Implant-supported Bridgework

An implant-supported bridge combines the design of a conventional bridge with implant technology. This means that your restoration can be secured onto implant posts rather than onto neighboring teeth. This eliminates the pressure that is usually placed onto the abutment teeth and gives your bridgework greater stability. In some cases, it is necessary to place one titanium implant post for each missing tooth, however, in many cases, 4-6 implants can support an implant bridge replacing the entire arch of teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Most patients have heard of dentures and recognize them as a solution that can replace a full arch of missing teeth. Much like implant-supported bridges, dentures can also be supported on a number of implant posts rather than using conventional adhesive. This helps to make dentures far more secure. Implant-supported dentures are also more comfortable, reduce the number of embarrassing slips, and greatly improve the quality of your day-to-day life. While the denture can be removed for daily cleaning, generally they are secured firmly inside your mouth allowing you to speak clearly and chew foods without messy dental adhesives.

Teeth Next Day™ Same-Day Implants

Same-Day dental implants also known as Teeth Next Day®, this is a revolutionary procedure that enables patients to achieve the smile of their dreams in just one day. This is achieved using a combination of dental implant posts and a permanent implant bridge fabricated by either nanoceramic materials, zirconia or porcelain.

This premium dental prosthesis is considered superior to porcelain since zirconia and nanoceramics are stronger materials than acrylics that are commonly used by most implant centers. Zirconia and nanoceramics have greater natural translucency, ensuring a final appearance that is almost impossible to tell apart from real teeth. During your treatment, the custom-made permanent bridge will be created while your supporting implants are placed. The number of implants needed will vary on your dental health and jawbone size. However, at the end of the treatment, you will be able to leave with your brand new smile in as little as two visits.
