Why Cleanings are Important
Even with daily brushing and flossing, dental plaque can collect in hard-to-reach areas of your smile. The millions of bacteria found in plaque then use the sugars from the foods you consume to produce acids that slowly deteriorate tooth enamel. If the plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar. Left untreated, tartar buildup can begin to affect your gums, teeth, and the underlying bone tissue.
By removing plaque and tartar buildup, the dentist can minimize your risk of gingivitis, gum infection, and other issues. Meanwhile, the need for restorative procedures such as Dental Implants or Crowns can be avoided altogether.
Many do not realize that regular cleanings provide much more than a healthy, beautiful smile. Oral health has been linked to overall health, and research indicates that gum disease and other conditions can increase your risk of pneumonia, heart disease, and other serious health concerns. In short, regular check-ups can be a simple and effective means of living a longer, healthier life.
What to Expect
During your visit, Our Team will closely examine your teeth and gums to diagnose any potential problems. Next, we will use a special ultrasonic instrument to dislodge any larger pieces of tartar, while spraying a cooling mist to wash away the remaining pieces. A smaller hand tool called a scaler will then be used to remove any remaining deposits. Once the teeth are completely clean, we will treat the teeth with a gentle polishing tool.
Your hygienist will also take time to provide you with tips for more effective brushing and flossing. Dr. Ajmo and his team believe patient education is an important element of effective dental care and will take every measure to help you maintain the best oral health possible between check-ups.
