Common Complications Caused by Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth usually erupt during the late teens to early 20s. Because they do not emerge until after all other adult teeth have developed, wisdom teeth often have difficulty breaking through the gums completely, resulting in tooth impaction. This overcrowding can lead to a number of oral health problems, including:

  • Tooth misalignment: Impacted wisdom teeth are often forced into unusual and uncomfortable angles, including toward the cheek, toward the tongue, backward, or even at complete right angles.
  • Dental damage: When impacted wisdom teeth push against neighboring teeth, it can lead to chips, fractures, and a significantly greater risk of infection.
  • Cysts: In response to the pressure and discomfort of impacted teeth, the surrounding tissue can become inflamed and develop sacs of fluid known as cysts. When left untreated, oral cysts can cause damage to the jawbone, teeth, and nerves.
  • Decay or periodontitis: Wisdom teeth that develop at improper angles can become much more vulnerable to decay and infection.

In addition to these oral health problems, wisdom teeth often cause considerable discomfort. Wisdom tooth extraction is most often performed on teens and young adults between 15 and 25 years of age. If a patient has not experienced trouble with his or her wisdom teeth by age 30, surgery is typically not recommended.
In most cases, patients are able to return to their regular routines within a few days of surgery.

What to Expect during Your Extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure, but you will need to arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home. When you arrive for your procedure, we will first administer anesthesia to numb the treatment area. Once you are fully prepped, Dr. Ajmo will carefully make an incision in the gums around the wisdom tooth. Any bone or gum tissue blocking the tooth or its root will then be removed.

To extract the tooth, Dr. Ajmo may gently wedge the molar back and forth to loosen it before pulling it out, or he will resect it into pieces and remove them one by one. Once the tooth is completely extracted, the incision will be sutured shut and the empty socket packed up with gauze. You will return home with specific instructions on how to care for the treatment area while it heals. In most cases, patients are able to return to their regular routines within a few days of surgery.
