Couple with straight, white, attractive teethThe benefits of good oral hygiene habits and quality professional dental care are numerous. These habits improve the appearance of the smile, maintain the health of the teeth and gums, and promote overall body health and well-being. So, it makes sense that dental care is especially important for patients who are pregnant. General dentistry services maintain oral health and prevent dental problems, both of which can benefit a pregnant woman and her growing baby. Dr. Jay Ajmo is happy to assist his Palm Beach Gardens patients with dental care throughout pregnancy. He ensures pregnant women get the dental care they need to benefit their oral and general health, while remaining sensitive to the unique needs a pregnant woman may have in regards to safety and comfort.

Benefits of Dental Care during Pregnancy

Many studies show that there is a direct link between oral health and general health. While many studies focus on heart health as it relates to oral health, there are also studies that show a link between pregnancy and oral health. Studies suggest that periodontal disease can lead to pre-term labor and/or low birth weight. Unfortunately, pregnant women have also been shown to be more vulnerable to periodontal disease, as the gums are likely to swell slightly and become tenderer during pregnancy (likely as a result of hormonal changes). The best defense a pregnant woman has against gum disease is the practice of good oral hygiene habits and the maintenance of professional dental care. Quality dental care can benefit pregnant women by keeping the gums and teeth clean, ridding the mouth of harmful bacteria, and monitoring for early signs of oral health complications (like gum disease). For all of these reasons, it is extremely important that women continue to see a dentist regularly throughout pregnancy.

Dental Care Guidelines During Pregnancy

The majority of dental care services are completely safe throughout the duration of pregnancy. However, in order to avoid any unnecessary risk and to ensure that pregnant women are as comfortable as possible when undergoing dental treatment, there are some guidelines that Dr. Ajmo recommends for his pregnant patients. Below are some tips for ensuring safe and comfortable dental care while pregnant:

  • Continue to schedule routine dental care (exams and cleanings)
  • When possible, schedule any necessary restorative dental work to take place during the second trimester of pregnancy
  • Refrain from dental x-rays while pregnant
  • Avoid elective cosmetic dentistry services while pregnant
  • Alert Dr. Ajmo and his team to any amenities that can improve comfort during dental appointments (extra pillows, blankets, etc.)
  • Try to keep knees slightly bent during dental appointments, or if appointments will be especially lengthy, get up and stretch as needed
  • Maintain open communication with Dr. Ajmo regarding any special needs or areas of concern
