Repairing and Replacing Porcelain Veneers
When it comes to having the smile of your dreams, there are plenty of options to consider. One of the most versatile and popular treatments over the years has been porcelain veneers. These little ceramic shells have been able to work legitimate wonders on smiles, making people look great and feel great as well.
When you meet with a skilled cosmetic dentist, you'll be able to learn more about the nature of porcelain veneers and various matters that are related to the upkeep and aftercare of them. Right now, our team would like to consider some of the basics with regard to the repair and replacement of porcelain veneers.
About Porcelain Veneers
Some basics about porcelain veneers first so you understand the nature of the replacement process. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic that are affixed to the front parts of the teeth in order to conceal various cosmetic flaws.
The Lifespan of Porcelain Veneers
Though porcelain veneers are very durable, they do have a given lifespan simply given the nature of wear and tear. In most cases, porcelain veneers last between 10 to 15 years. If a patient takes exceptionally good care of his or her teeth, the porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years.
Causes of Damage to Porcelain Veneer
Porcelain veneers are subject to damage from normal biting and chewing just as natural teeth would be. Injuries to the mouth can also lead to damage to the porcelain veneers.
Tooth Decay and Porcelain Veneer Replacement
Another important factor to consider with regard to replacement or repair of porcelain veneers is tooth decay. While the porcelain veneers themselves are not subject to tooth decay, the tooth structure around them is still vulnerable to plaque. If the tooth structure around the veneer does decay, then the porcelain veneer will need to be removed and replaced in order to address the compromised tooth structure.
Repairing Porcelain Veneers
Repairing porcelain veneers involves the use of a small amount of tooth-colored resin that helps patch up compromised veneer structure. In these cases, the veneer will remain in place and not have to be entirely removed and replaced.
Replacing Porcelain Veneer
When a porcelain veneer needs to be replaced, it will involve the full removal of the veneer and the re-prepping of the tooth. In essence, this is a repeat of the natural porcelain veneers process, with a small amount of tooth structure removed and an impression of that tooth taken.
We'll work hard to ensure that you retain as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. Working in a minimally invasive fashion is always best.
Tips for Prolonging the Life of Your Porcelain Veneers
It's always ideal to maintain the life of your porcelain veneers naturally. Here are five tips that will keep those veneers healthy for years to come:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day
- Floss your teeth at least once a night
- Visit your dentist twice a year for regular checkups
- Wear protective mouthguards when playing sports
- Do not chew on objects that are not meant to be chewed (e.g., pen caps, fingernails)
