What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontitis occurs when inflammation or infection of the gums (gingivitis) is untreated or treatment is delayed. Infection and inflammation spreads from the gums (gingiva) to the ligaments and bone that support the teeth. Loss of support causes the teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. Periodontitis is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults.
Periodontitis is an active, persistent infection that requires more than scaling and root planing ( SRP ) otherwise known as periodontal gum treatment. At PGA Center for Advanced Dentistry, we also use ARESTIN® (minocycline HCl ) which is a sustained release, locally applied antibiotic that targets the bacteria underlying the active, persistent infection of periodontal disease.
When you use ARESTIN® (minocycline HCl ) in addition to periodontal gum treatment, you receive the benefits of comprehensive treatment that's superior to scaling and root planing alone. Benefits include,
- Decreased bleeding on probing
- Immediate and sustained reductions in harmful periodontal bacteria to healthier levels
- A healthier oral environment for up to 30 days, so healing can begin
- Decreased pocket depth
ARESTIN® (minocycline HCl ) is indicated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing ( SRP ) procedures for reduction of pocket depth in patients with adult periodontitis. ARESTIN® (minocycline HCl ) may be used as part of a periodontal maintenance program, which includes good oral hygiene and SRP. Please contact us today to schedule your appointment, (561) 627-8666
