Teeth Whitening Before Veneers, Bonding, and Crowns
If you are undergoing treatment with porcelain veneers, dental bonding, or porcelain crowns, you may want to consider having your teeth whitened before your scheduled treatment. Porcelain and composite resin, the materials used in the manufacturing of veneers, dental bonding, and crowns, do not respond to whitening treatments like your natural teeth; this is why it is important to ensure your teeth are the desired shade of white prior to your cosmetic or restorative treatment. Palm Beach cosmetic dentist Jay L. Ajmo can help you decide if teeth whitening is right for you.
Whitening Before Porcelain Veneers
Having your teeth professionally whitened before receiving veneers is often recommended, especially if you would like a whiter smile. We offer Zoom! Whitening to ensure the ultimate results since porcelain veneers cannot be whitened once they are made. This is important to consider if you are only receiving one or two veneers. For such circumstances, you should have your teeth professionally whitened so your porcelain veneers can be matched to the newly whitened teeth instead of teeth that have become yellowed and discolored. It is easier to match the veneer to the whitened teeth than to try to whiten the teeth to match the veneer because the level of whitening you reach is not always predictable. When porcelain veneers are placed on all of the front facing teeth, whitening may not be necessary. Regardless, many patients still opt for teeth whitening so the back and lower teeth more closely match to the shade of the pearly white veneers.
Whitening Before Dental Bonding
Dental bonding can be used to treat various dental flaws. It is also used as an alternative to teeth whitening, especially for those patients who have tooth stains that do not respond to whitening treatment, or whose teeth are too discolored to achieve the desired results with professional teeth whitening. After the teeth whitening treatment is performed, Dr. Ajmo can use a dental bonding composite that matches the new shade of the teeth to mask deep stains, close gaps, or change the size or shape of the tooth. Whitening your teeth prior to dental bonding treatment can be helpful in achieving the full desired results; the whitening treatment removes discoloration, while bonding is used to address any remaining aesthetic problems.
Whitening Before Porcelain Crowns
Teeth whitening before porcelain crown placement is commonly performed. Since most people only receive one or two dental crowns at a time, whitening before crown placement is important in order to ensure the crown will match the whitened teeth. As with porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns cannot be made whiter once they have been made. If you would like to have your teeth whitened, it should be done before you are fitted with your dental crown so your crown can be made to match the new shade of your teeth. Trying to whiten the teeth to match the shade of the porcelain crown is more difficult, especially when the crown is placed on a highly visible tooth.
